Learn How To Create A Pair Of Robotic Eyes

Getting Started

Start off with a new document (Ctrl + N) with a canvas size of 600 x 530 pixels. Fill (G) your background with your desired color, I've filled mine with a nice blue gradient to compliment the shininess of the robotic eyes.

Creating The Left Eye

Now this is where it gets interesting because were going to create the whole eye from a bunch of layer styles. Create a new layer and label it "eye", then select the "Ellipse Tool" (U) with the following settings.

image 2

Drag out an ellipse onto your canvas, make sure you use the color white #ffffff for your ellipse.

Quick Tip:

Holding down the shift key on keyboard whilst dragging will ensure the ellipse is 100% round.

Once you've dragged out your ellipse add the following layer styles.

The colors on the gradient overlay and the outer glow can be changed to what ever color you wish, I've gone for a nice blue gradient and outer glow to compliment the background. You should have something like this.

Making The Eyes Glossy

Create a new layer labelled "Shine #1? then select the "Pen Tool" (P), change the path type to paths then draw a path like the image below.

image 21

Right click inside the path and go to "Fill Path", make sure your have the color white #ffffff set as your foreground.

image 22

Were now going to load a selection around our eye and remove the excess shine from our shine layer. Go ahead and load a selection around your eye.

Quick Tip:

To load a selection around an element click the little thumbnail inside of your desired layer whilst holding down the CTRL key on the keyboard.

image 23

Once you've loaded the selection around the eye select the "Shine #1? layer then go to "Select > Inverse". Once the selection has been inversed hit the delete key. You should have something like this.

image 24

With the "Shine #1? layer still selected set the layers opacity to 3%.

image 25

Finally finish off this step by duplicating the "Shine #1? layer and flipping it to the other side.

Creating The Right Eye

To make the right eye simply duplicate all your layers and move them over using the "Move Tool" (V).
