Making Borders

Some people asked me about how I do the borders from my artwork. Well, here let's see a way to create some very interesting borders, with some "pixeltool" style.

Very first step: A very old paper picture. I find this in the useful gallery of Temabina Stock. Some resize, and the background is ready to work. I need to maintain here some room for a interesting border. When I feel comfortably with the image, I apply 'Merge down'. This makes my layer just a background.

I'll add a new texture, again from Temabina Stock. I'm goin to use here just a little part of the image. Using a layer mask, I only turn visible a soft section in the right. This layer (layer 1) should be in normal mode.

At this point I think I need to make the entire image more "interesting". Adding other texture I can solve this. Easy, right? I set this layer to multiply mode, and some details will be added to the image. The "secret" behind this is to use different layers mode, with different levels of 'fill' and 'opacity'. This is my layer 2.

Now, the image looks opaque and dark. Here's come the trick: A hue/saturation (adjustment) layer in overlay mode. That helps to bring some "life" to the image. I used here this values: Hue: 29; saturation: 23; lightness: 0. The "colorize" option will be checked too.

I decided to include one more texture, in a layer between the layer 2 and the adjustment layer. I used this time part from a bone texture, from Pb Stock. This will be my layer 3, a layer in multiply mode and with 50% o' opacity.

Borders Tutorial: Final Result   Here's the final look. I've added here a image, to show the way this borders can work. Feather courtesy of Pb Stock. That layer is my layer 4, using overlay mode.

This is the way my layers palette look in this sample photoshop file, with all the job done.

I think that the key at the moment of create some artwork, reside in the imagination. The technique is very important, but you can learn how to use tools in several ways, but the imagination is unique and priceless.

Peace out and God Bless!
