Motion Blur


Simulate a moving camera with a slow shutter speed.


image 1 1. Open the image for editing.

image 2 2. Create a new layer with a white canvas and add a layer mask with a black canvas (layer> Add Layer Mask> Hide All).

image 3 3. With the layer mask selected, use the brush tool (B) to paint over the area of the vehicle with white.

image 4 4. Select the top layer (not its layer mask) and use the "Apply Image" tool (Image> Apply Image) to apply the following properties:

Source: filename
Layer: Background
Channel: RGB
Blending: Normal
Opacity: 100%

Click OK.


image 5 5. Use the "Line" tool (U) to draw a line parallel to the horizon of the image.

image 6 6. Apply a "Motion Blur" (Filter> Blur> Motion Blur) to the current layer. When it asks to rasterize the shape, click OK. Set the "Distance" to 25 pixels and select an angle that will keep the line as sharp as it can be. Click OK.

image 7 7. Delete the current layer.

image 8 8. Select the layer "Background" and repeat the previous fliter used (Ctrl+F). Repeat this step as many times as necessary to increase the the motion blur.

image 9 9.Duplicate the top layer and fill the new layer's layer mask with black.

image 10 10. Use the "Brush" tool (B) to paint over one of the wheel with the colour white.

image 11 11. Select the current layer (not its layer mask) and apply a "Radial Blur" filter (Filter> Blur> Radial Blur) with the following properties:

Amount: Speed of wheels
Blur Method: Spin
Quality: Best

Click OK.


Motion Blur Tutorial: Final Result 12. Repeat step 10 and 11 for the rest of the wheels. Rollover the image in this step to see the original image before this technique was applied.
