Pen and Watercolour


Make your photographs look like an artistic pen and watercolour painting.


image 1 1. Open the image for editing.

image 2 2. Duplicate the layer and name the top layer "Pen" and the bottom layer "Colour". Doubleclick on the layer "Background" to change its name.

image 3 3. On the layer "Pen", apply a "Find Edges" filter (Filter> Stylize> Find Edges).

image 4 4. Using the "Hue/Saturation" tool (Ctrl+U), decrease the "Saturation" to "-100". Click OK.

image 5 5. Set the "Brightness" and "Contrast" to "50" using the "Brightness/Contrast" tool (Image> Adjustment> Brightness/Contrast). Click OK.

image 6 6. Set the current layer's blending mode to "Multiply".

image 7 7. Select the layer "Colour" and apply a "Median" filter (Filter> Noise> Median). Select a "Radius" that will remove all the details of the photograph. Click OK.

image 8 8. Using the "Hue/Saturation" tool, increase the "Saturation" to "50". Click OK.

Pen and Watercolour Tutorial: Final Result 9. Your photograph now looks like an artistic painting. Try using the "Underpainting" filter (Filter> Artistic> Underpainting) to add a canvas texture. Rollover the image on the left of this step to see the original image before this technique was applied.
