The artistic filters in Photoshop usually looks flat due to the lack of textures. Artistic filters can look more realistic by adding a texture to it. Learn how to add texture to your artistic filters so it looks like a real painting.

1. Open the image for editing. |

2. Use the "Filter Gallery" (Filter> Filter Gallery) to apply an artistic filter of your choice. For this step, I've used a "Dry Brush" with its default properties. Click OK. |

3. Duplicate the layer and apply an "Emboss" filter (Filter> Stylize> Emboss) and set the height to 2 pixels. Increase the "Amount" to increase the height of the texture and set the angle to an angle that will show the most details. Click OK. Change the current layer's blending mode to "Hard Light". |

4. With the texture added to the painting, the brush strokes look as if it was hand painted. Rollover the image in this step to see the original image before this technique was applied. |
If this painting is not going to be printed on a canvas, try adding a "Pattern Overlay" layer style and select an artistic canvas as the pattern with the blending mode as hard light to make the painting look like it was painted on a canvas.
