Making Tsunami


Random curved shapes forming a tsunami.


image 1 1. Create a new 640x480 pixels document with a black background then create a new layer.

image 2 2. Use the Circular Marquee tool (M) to create a selection of s circle. Fill the selection with white and deselect (Ctrl+D).

image 3 3. Use the Offset filter (Filter> Other> Offset) to apply these settings:

Horizontal: -320 pixels right
Vertical: -240 pixels down
Undefined Areas: Set to Transparent


image 4 4. Change the opacity of the current layer to 50%.

image 5 5. In the Actions pallet (Alt+F9), create a new action and choose a Function Key.

image 6 6. With the action recording, duplicate the current layer (Ctrl+J).

image 7 7. Use the Offset filter (Filter> Other> Offset) to apply these settings:

Horizontal: +5 pixels right
Vertical: +5 pixels down
Undefined Areas: Set to Transparent


image 8 8. Transform the layer (Ctrl+J) with these settings:

W: 160%
H: 65%
Angle: 60.0º


image 9 9. Distort the image using the Polar Coordinates filter (Filter> Distort> Polar Coordinates) using the Rectangular to Polar method.

image 10 10. Stop the action and press the function key you've defined in step 5 about 15 times.

image 11 11. Delete the 2nd layer from the bottom, link all of the layers except for Background then merge linked (Ctrl+E).

image 12 12. Use the Canvas Size tool (Image> Canvas Size) to apply these settings:

Width: 100 percent
Height: 300 percent
Relative: Unchecked
Anchor: Top left
Canvas extension color: Background


image 13 13. On the top layer, press the function key you've defined in step 5 about 5 times.

image 14 14. Link all of the layers except for Background then merge linked (Ctrl+E).

image 15 15. Transform (Ctrl+T) the layer with these settings:

Width: 40%
Height: 40%
Angle: -90.0º


image 16 16. Colorize the image using the Hue/Saturation tool (Ctrl+U). These are the settings I used:

Colorize: Checked
Hue: 200
Saturation: 100
Lightness: -30

Mine didn't come out anything like this (i followed it step by step!) because when I used the canvas size tool, My image looked like it was chopped in half, and that never went away. I wish I could upload a pic...And idk why we have to link all of the images before we merge them, can't we just uncheck the background and merge visible (i don't wanna use keyboard shortcuts before I know where the button is)?
