Retro Background Effect


Step 1: Creating the Workspace:

Start with a 420 x 316 Document and fill in the background colour as Black #000000

Step 2: Making the first stripe

Make a new layer are create small long strips going down the document, with the Rectangular marquee tool like so:

Once you have made the first selection right click within it and select fill, and fill it in with #FF00BA:

Step 3: Duplicating the above

Duplicate this process to get this result:

If you made a layer each time you created a stripe then merge the layers together. You can do this by highlighting them all and then right clicking on them and selecting Merge layers. We need to do this because the next step involves using a filter and our stripes need to be on one layer only.

Step 4: Make it Retro

Select the layer with all the stripes on and then go to Filter > Distort and then choose Polar Coordinates and apply this setting:

Click OK and our document should now look like this:

Next we're going to apply a bit of a twirl to the background so this time go to Filter > Distort and then choose Twirl and apply these settings:

Once you have done that click OK and now our background will start to take shape:

Step 5: Add some filters

Now that along would work as something Retro but lets go on step further!

Right click on the layer we have been working on and click Blending Options. Apply the following settings for...:

Outer Glow:

Inner Glow:

Click OK to apply these settings and our end result should be like this:
