Here is a preview of the final effect I have for this tutorial: (click to enlarge)

To complete this tutorial, you will need the following stocks:

Mist Brushes

Cloud Brushes

Font

Rock

Fire

Step 1

Create a new document sized 800px * 1100px, fill the background with black colour. Use the Mist brushes to paint some fog/mist on the background layer: (adjust the opacity and flow of the brushes to be around 40%)

image 2

Then create a new layer, use the cloud brush to paint a piece of cloud, compress it down as shown below:

image 3

Then paint some more cloud on the same layer in conjunction with the first piece:

image 4

Step 2

Use the font you downloaded, type a letter in the center of the canvas:

image 5

Load the "Rock" stock image into Photoshop, use the quick selection with the following settings, select a piece of rock from the image:

image 6

image 7

Copy and paste the select onto our image, follow the shape of the letter you typed, also erase the edges of the rock with a soft eraser, as shown below:

image 8

Repeat this step and select some more rocks, copy and paste them onto the image, until the letter is all covered:

image 9

Hide the original letter layer, and you will have the following effect:

image 10

To add a bit of depth on the image, we can use a black brush to paint some shadow under the letter:

image 11

Step 3

Load the Fire stock image into Photoshop, use the Lasso Tool with 50px feather to select the following portion:

image 12

Copy and paste the selection onto our image, place it onto top of the letter, reduce its size to fit: (also change the layer blending mode of this fire layer to "Screen")

image 13

Use a soft eraser to erase the edges of the fire a little:

image 14

Duplicate this fire layer once, resize and rotate the duplicated layer, position it as shown below:

image 15

Made another two duplicates of the fire layer, rotate and resize each duplicated layer to create a splashing effect,  as shown below:

image 16

Step 4

Now we have pretty much done with the overall effect. Let's add the following two image adjustment layers to fine-tune the effect a bit:

Levels

image 17

Mask on levels adjustment layer:

Curves

Mask on curves adjustment layer:

As you can see, the fire effect looks more vibrant and bright then before, after we applied those two adjustment layer:

Step 5

We're almost done! Lastly I added one color balance adjustment layer to make the overall environment warmer a bit:

After you're happy with the colours, flatten the image, and apply the following smart sharpen filter: (this will help bring out some more details of the rock and fire)
