Learn how to make text out of various stones.
1.
Start a new document and write some black text. Make the text fairly
big (larger than the example image is recommended, around 200 pt).
Rasterize the text layer by right-clicking on it in the Layers Palette
and selecting Rasterize Layer. Press 'D' then 'X'. Now go Filter>Texture>Stained Glass and use these settings:
Cell Size: 7
Border thickness: 5
Light Intensity: 0
2. Grab the Magic Wand Tool and choose the settings: Tolerance 32, Anti-Aliased checked, Contiguous not checked, and Use All Layers not checked. Click on the black area of your text and press Ctrl+Shift+I (Mac: Cmd+Shift+I) to inverse the selection. Hit Delete to delete the white area. Now, Ctrl+click (Cmd+click) on the layer with the text in the Layers Palette to load it as a selection. Once you've done that add the selection to a new alpha channel. (To do that go to the Channels Palette and create a new channel, then fill it with white). Hit Ctrl+D (Cmd+D) to deselect and go Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur with a radius of 1.2. Hit Ctrl+L (Command+L) and bring the left and right sliders toward the middle until your edges are smooth.
3. Ctrl+click (Cmd+click) the channel in the Channels Palette to load it as a selection. Create a new layer in the Layers Palette and fill your selection with black. Delete the orignal type layer. Now go back to the Channels Palette and make the alpha channel containing your type active. Ctrl+click (Cmd+click) the channel to load the selection and apply a Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur of 3 - 5. Next, go back to the layer you were last working on and go Filter>Render>Lighting Effects. You may see the settings I used here. After you apply the lighting effects, go Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur with a radius of 1. My example image was a little too dark for my liking, so I adjusted the Brightness/Contrast by going Image>Adjustments>Brightness/Contrast. I bumped up the brightness to 100. You only want to adjust the Brightness because when you adjust Brightness, you are adjusting black, when you adjust Contrast, you are adjusting white. Next, add some noise by going Filter>Noise>Add Noise, make sure Monochrome is checked and use about 15 - 25 %. Last, right-click the layer in the Layers Palette, pick Blending Options, and throw on a drop shadow. You're done.
