Removing Shadows

Correct photos taken with the subject facing behind the sun.


image 1 1. Open the image for editing.

image 2 2. Duplicate the current layer (Ctrl+J) and add a layer mask (Layer> Add Layer Mask> Reveal All).

image 3 3. With the layer mask selected, use the "Apply Image" tool (Image> Apply Image) to apply the following properties:

Source: filename
Layer: Merged
Channel: RGB
Invert: Checkmarked
Blending: Multiply
Opacity: 100%

Click OK.


image 4 4. Set the layers' blending mode to "Screen" and duplicate the layer several time until all shadows are removed.

image 5 5. Link all of the layers except for "Background" and merge linked (Ctrl+E).

image 6 6. Select the merged layers and add a layer mask (Layer> Add Layer Mask> Reveal All). Erase the area around the subject.

image 7 7. With the layer mask selected, use the "Apply Image" tool (Image> Apply Image) to apply the following properties:

Source: filename
Layer: Background
Channel: RGB
Invert: Checkmarked
Blending: Multiply
Opacity: 100%

Click OK.


Removing Shadows 8. Reduce the opacity of the current layer to reduce the effect. Rollover the image in this step to see the original image before this technique was applied.
