Most people don't have perfectly white teeth and it can sometimes turn into the center of attention in a photograph. This tutorial will teach you how to make teeth whiter.

1. Open the image for editing. For this tutorial, select a photograph with stained teeth. |

2. Duplicate the "Background" layer (Ctrl+J). |

3. Use the Hue/Saturation tool to adjust the Yellows saturation (CTRL+U). Set the saturation to -100. Click OK. |

4. Create a new snapshot by clicking on the "Create new snapshot" button on the bottom of the History pallet. |

5. Change the blending mode of "Layer 1" to "Difference". |
 |
6. Merge down the layers (Ctrl+E), select the canvas (Ctrl+A), and copy to clipboard (Ctrl+C). Then select "Snapshot 1" in the History pallet. |

7. Add a layer mask to "Layer 1" by clicking on the "Add layer mask" button on the bottom of the layers pallet. Set the layer's blending mode to "Normal". |

8. In the Channels pallet, show the visibility "Layer 1 Mask" and hide "RGB". Select "Layer 1 Mask" and paste (Ctrl+V). |

9. In the Levels window (Ctrl+L), drag the white Input Slider to the edge of the first group of pixels on the left side. Click OK. |

10. In the "Layer 1 Mask" channel, paint around the lips the colour black. Rollover the image to see what the channel should look like. Turn the RGB channels back on (Ctrl+~) and hide "Layer 1 Mask". |

11. Select "Layer 1" in the Layers pallet. Make sure you are in "Standard Mode" by clicking on the "Edit in Standard Mode" button in the Tools pallet above the screen mode buttons. Adjust the Master Hue/Saturation (Ctrl+U) for "Layer 1", set the saturation to -100 and adjust the lightness. Make sure that the Preview checkbox is checked and that the teeth are not brighter than the eyes. Click OK. |

12. This person's teeth is now naturally whiter and does not look like it was digitally fixed. Rollover the image on the left of this step to see the original image before this technique was applied. |
