Black & White To Color

In this tutorial you are going to learn how to colorize a black and white photo. This is not only helpful for older photos, but it is also useful for using different colors than normal (example: making a plant purple instead of green).

Step 1. For this tutorial, you will need the black and white fruit bowl image. Open up the image, and create three new layers. Set each of the layers blend modes to color.

Step 2. Select the first layer, and set your foreground color to A80000. Now select the brush tool and begin coloring over the three fruits pictured below. You will notice that the color you are using will change depending on how much light there is on the fruit. The color blend mode also keeps the textures of the image below it, therefore colorizing it!

Step 3. Select the second layer, and set FFD200 as your foreground color. Once again, use the brush tool to colorize the bananas.

Step 4. All that is left is colorizing the remaining fruit. For this, I used FFD200 as my foreground color. Once you've colored the remaining fruit, your all done! Try experimenting with different colors on the fruits and see how they turn out.
