Create a Stunning Pop-out of Border Effect

Create a new document with these dimensions.

What we're doing here is creating a frame and then making some special modifications. Grab the rectangular marquee tool and create a selection like this.

Create a new layer in the layers palette. Now press Alt Backspace to fill this selection with whatever your foreground color is.

 

Now create a stroke layer effect on this layer with these settings. We want to create a gold/yellow border.

Now drag in a photo of a person that you want to have in the frame. We are going to make part of the person stick out of the frame. This effect is seen often like on the backs of videos, etc. Edit: Transform: Scale down if you need to.

Now create a clipping mask under the Layer menu. This will 'clip' this layer 'into' the layer beneath which is the frame.

Since we want her head to stick out of the frame here's where it gets a little more interesting. Select the frame/filled layer in the layers palette by Ctrl Clicking on the layer icon.

Now that you have the marching ants as a selection, choose the cowboy lasso tool and put it on 'add to selection' as shown (in the options bar). Now make a selection around her forehead as shown to add this area to the selection.

Here you can see the modified selection. Since we are on the base layer in the clipping group/mask, go ahead and Alt backspace to fill this additional area. Filling here will bring in the pixels of the clipped layer of the girl; this is because it shares the attributes of being connected to the layer so instead of white, you will 'fill' with the pixels of the layer that is clipped into it.

Here is something useful which you may or may not know. Right click on the layer effect in the palette and choose Create Layer.

What this does is put the layer effect onto it's own layer and independent of the current layer. Here you can see the yellow stroke is now on it's own layer.
