Illustrator Creating Swirls

Swirls created in Illustrator

So in this Illustrator tutorial you will learn how to create swirls with the pen tool and customized brushes.

Let's start with forming our brush. Create a new document (CTRL + N) and draw a triangle.

Now use the selection tool (V) and drag and drop your triangle shape to the brush window (F5). Select Art brush and use these settings in next window.
img

Now you got your brush ready. Let's get started with the Pen tool (P). With the Pen tool selected draw a stroke. When done click the brush you created earlier. Resize the stroke till you get a decent look.
img

Now select the Spiral tool (Expand the line segment tool to find the Spiral tool). Click your stroke and click OK. Now fit in your spiral at the end of the stroke to get a look like this one.

Looking great isn't it ? Now let's create some leaves. I drew this leaf using the Pen tool in Illustrator.
img

When the leaf is created, add it to symbol by drag and dropping it with the selection tool into the Symbol window (Shift + CTRL + F11).
img

Use your leaves on your swirls. I've decided to place two leaves, one big and one small.

Now you basically created your swirl. I'd recommend you playing a bit around with different shapes of brushes and leaves. It's only your creativity that set limits.
