Image search is probably not, to be honest, something that the average person uses every day. For those occasions when you're looking for just the right pic, though, Yahoo's introduced a new set of filters that brings its engine roughly up to (and perhaps a bit beyond) the industry standard.
Need a photo of a certain size? Yahoo will toss the usual small, medium, large, and wallpaper options at you. Then things get a little more interesting thanks to a "custom" option that lets users input width and height parameters. Microsoft and Ask don't make getting specific so easy.
Yahoo will let you restrict a search to black and white photos, too, although Google, Microsoft, and Ask all match it here.
Next, there's one key difference: Yahoo's now letting users either exclude or exclusively look through photos from Flickr as they please. This shuts the door on questions concerning favoritism, while giving the company an opportunity to direct all sorts of traffic to its photo-sharing site.
Finally, on the Yahoo Search Blog, Anuj Sahai and Ramu Adapala noted, "These filters are just the first improvements we will be rolling out in the coming months for Image Search. Stay tuned for more features that will make finding what you're looking for a breeze."
