Pixel Art Basics

Any one can do pixel art. I'm no expert pixel artist but with some practice you will soon get the hang off pixel art.

First open up a new document 300x300 and set the background colour to a bright green.

Now zoom in to 1600% and select you pencil tool with 1px brush, and black as you selected colour.

Create a new layer.
We will now begin to create our first simple pixel building.

When drawing pixel buildings you must keep to the same perspective.
To draw a line we go to pixels along and one up or down.

When it comes to joining the two sides together wee use 3 pixels.

This is so we can create the the straight edge.

So first we must map out our building, by using the method to draw lines as explained above, we will keep our building small.

Now its time to ad height.

You can cheat a bit with photo shop and we can duplicate the layer and move it up using the arrow keys to set the height for our building.

Now we must add the sides to our building always go the the left hand edge of any pixel when working on the left side (of your center)

But for the center line we use the 3 pixels so that it keeps perspective.

And add to the right of the pixels when your on the right side of your picture.

Now we must finish up the base.
To do this we fill in the cube using 3 colour's a light for the left side, darker version for the right and then a colour in between for the top.I have also added added a door .

And a window

You can see in the screens above how I used the colour's to give the finished effect.

And finally we must add highlights and shadows.

And that is the basics of pixel art.

Pixel Art Basics Tutorial: Final Result

When creating pixel art there are many ways to carry out, and each person finds their own style some people use small areas for the buildings ect, and some use larger.
To make large more detailed pictures you don't use any bigger size brush. But instead just draw it a lot larger.(Sounds obvious but compare the two screens below, the first was drawn by one of my mates, and the second by me)

That's it really, have fun pixeling!
