Textured Chain Tutorial

Step 1

First open a new document of any size, I'm using a 500x500 document. Go ahead and create a new layer.

Step 2

We need to make a ring for the chain, so take out your Elliptical Marquee Tool, and draw a circle and fill it with a goldish color, i used #FFF36D.

Step 3

Right click the selection and press: transform selection, now transform it until it looks a little like the picture below. Press the DELETE button on your keyboard to delete the selection.

Step 4

Press Ctrl + J on your keyboard to duplicate this layer and place it under the original layer.

Then change the color to a darker yellow, i used #A7A139

Step 5

Now get out the move tool by pressing 'V' on your keyboard, and drag the topmost circle a little down and to the left.

Step 6

Now we have the base of the ring, you'll want to add a little texture before we move on. So first merge those 2 layers by clicking on the topmost layer to select it and press Ctrl + E on your keyboard.

Step 7

Now open up the texture image available in the download pack for this tutorial. Press Ctrl + A to highlight the entire canvas, and press Ctrl + C to copy it to your clipboard.

Step 8

Next go back to the initial photoshop document we had designed our ring on, hold down the Ctrl key on your keyboard and click on the merged ring layer.

This should make a selection of the entire ring. Now go to Select->Modify->Inverse and invert this selection.

Step 9

Change the blending mode of that layer to multiply. Optionally you may duplicate that layer by pressing Ctrl + J on your keyboard to give it more depth and contrasting colors.

Step 10

Next we'll merge all of these layers together by pressing Ctrl + E on your keyboard repeatedly until all layers are merged together.

Step 11

Press Ctrl+T and resize that layer, goto edit > transform > perspective, mess around a little there to give it a little oval shape.

Step 12

Now just keep duplicating by pressing Ctrl + J on your keyboard, rotating and moving by pressing Ctrl + T on your keyboard to make the little rings of the chain.
