Custom White Balance Cards

An alternative of purchasing expensive white balance cards. White balance cards can simulate coloured filters such as a warming or cooling filter.

Create a new document (Ctrl+N).

Use the "Hue/Saturation" tool (Ctrl+U) and set the "Lightness" to "-50". Click OK.

If you are creating a grey card, skip this step. Add a new "Photo Filter" adjustment layer (Layer> New Adjustment Layer> Photo Filter) and select a filter you would like to use. The filters you use will create an opposite result, for example, to create a warm white balance card that will make your images warmer, select a cooling filter.

Custom White Balance Cards Tutorial: Final ResultPrint the document. To use these custom white balance cards, use the manual white balance feature, hold the white balance card in front of the camera, then point the camera to the white balance card and capture the white balance information using your camera.

White balance cards can usually be found costing over $50 USD. Although the results may slightly differ, making your own white balance cards not only saves you money, but allows you to have an unlimited amount of different white balance cards.
