Open up any two images in adobe. Pick your starting image.
Mine is below:

Go to image>>canvas size. Change the width about 135-150 percent. Copy and paste the second image on to your main canvas. Set the images so they are slightly overlapping. On the second image (the top one) select "add layer mask" in the layers palette. Hold down the paint bucket tool, and select the gradient tool. While holding down shift, draw a line from the middle of the second image to the middle of the first image. It should look like below.

Next, grab the eraser tool. Select a soft, round, brush, whatever size you want. Set the opacity at 65-70%. Erase the parts of your second picture that cover your first.

I ended up moving the two pictures closer together. Now you can add text, effects, etc to your image. Here is my final picture:
