image 1 16. Make a selection of the current layer (Ctrl+Click on the layer).
image 2 17. Use the "Motion Blur" tool (Filter> Blur> Motion Blur) to apply the following properties:

Angle: 0&ordm;
Distance: 200 pixels

Click OK.

image 3 18. Use the "Image Size" tool (Image> Image Size) to resize the image to the size of the pattern. For this step, I've chose a width and height of 5 pixels.
image 4 19. Define this document as a pattern (Edit> Define Pattern). Type in "Carbon Fibre" as the name and click OK.
image 5 20. Close the current document without saving and switch back to the photo.
image 6 21. Duplicate the current layer (Ctrl+J).
image 7 22. Select the canvas (Ctrl+A) and clear (Delete).
image 8 23. Use the "Paint Bucket" tool (G) to fill the current layer with the following properties:

Fill: Pattern
Pattern: Carbon
Mode: Normal
Opacity :100%

image 9 24. Unlink the current layer with its layer mask.
image 10 25. Use the "Transform" tool (Ctrl+T) to distort the image into the vehicle's perspective.
image 11 26. Make a selection of the current layer (Ctrl+click on the layer). Select the layer "Background" and copy (Ctrl+C).
image 12 27. Create a new document with the following properties:

Preset: Clipboard

Click OK.

image 13 28. Paste (Ctrl+V) into the new document. Use the "Healing Brush" tool (J) or the "Clone Stamp" tool (S) to remove all reflections of high contrast. This document will be used as displacement map that will be used later. Save this document on your desktop as "displace.psd".
image 14 29. Close the current document without saving and switch back to the photo. Increase the selection (Select> Modify> Expand) by about 1/50th of the hood's width. For this step, I've selected 3 pixels. Remember the amount of pixels you've used in this step.
image 15 30. With the top layer selected, use the "Displace" filter (Filter> Distort> Displace) to apply the following properties:

Horizontal Scale: Amount of pixels you've used in step 29
Vertical Scale: Amount of pixels you've used in step 29
Displacement Map: Stretch To Fit
Undefined Areas: Repeat Edge Pixels

Click OK. Navigate to your desktop, select "displace.psd" and click OK.

Repeate the filter (Ctrl+F) once or more until the layer starts to form a shape.

image 16 31. Duplicate the current layer (Ctrl+J).
image 17 32. With the new layer selected, use the "Apply Image" tool (Image> Apply Image>) to apply the following properties:

Source: filename
Layer: Background
Channel: RGB
Invert: Uncheckmarked
Blending: Normal
Opacity :100%

Click OK.

image 18 33. Desaturate (Ctrl+Shift+U) and set the current layer's blending mode to "Multiply".
Carbon Fibre Hood Tutorial: Final Result 34. Here is the final image of a low resolution version to show the pattern used in this tutorial. Your final image should not look like this. Rollover the image in this step to see the original image before this technique was applied.
image 20 35. Here is a cropped area of a high resolution version with a hood that is too flat. If your image looks similar to this, you need to go back to step 30 and apply the "Displace" filter (Filter> Distort> Displace) filter more.
image 21 36. Here is a cropped area of a high resolution version. The carbon fibre pattern is properly wrapped to the vehicle's hood.
