Add a starry night to your photographs taken during the night.

image 1 1. Open the image for editing. Select an image with a sky taken during the night.
image 2 2. Create a new layer (Ctrl+Shift+N) and fill it with the colour black.
image 3 3. Use the "Add Noise" filter (Filter> Noise> Add Noise) to apply the following properties:

Amount: 5%
Distribution: Gaussian
Monochromatic: Checkmarked

Click OK.

image 4 4. Apply an "Auto Levels" (Ctrl+Shift+L).
image 5 5. Use the "Threshold" tool (Image> Adjustment> Threshold) and adjust the slider according to the amount of stars that will appear in the sky. Make sure that the "Preview" checkbox is checkmarked so that you ca see the results while you adjust the input slider.
image 6 6. Use the "Magic Wand" tool (W) to select the black area of the current layer. Once you've selected the area, press "Delete" to delete the current selection.
image 7 7. Add a new layer mask (Layer> Add Layer Mask> Reveal All) to the current layer.
image 8 8. With the layer mask selected, use the "Apply Image" tool the apply the following properties:

Source: filename
Layer: Background
Channel: RGB
Invert: Uncheckmarked
Blending: Normal
Opacity: 100%

Click OK.

image 9 9. Add an "Outer Glow" layer style (Layer> Layer Style> Outer Glow to the current layer and adjust the "Spread" and "Size" to the size and hardness of the star's glow. Click OK.
image 10 10. Add a "Gradient Overlay" layer style (Layer> Layer Style> Gradient Overlay) and apply the following properties:

Blend Mode: Normal
Opacity: 100%
Gradient: Black to White
Reverse: Uncheckmarked
Angle: 90%
Scale: 100%

Click OK.

Starry Night Tutorial: Final Result 11. Reduce the current layer's opacity to reduce the brightness of the stars. Rollover the image on the left of this step to see the original image before this technique was applied.
