Realistic Sky With Clouds

Using several layers, create a realistic sky with clouds.


image 1 1. Create a new 800x600 pixels document and fill the background with a blue. The blue used in this step is #006CD9.

image 2 2. Use the default foreground and background colours (D), create a new layer (Ctrl+Shift+N) and apply a "Clouds" filter (Filter> Render> Clouds).

image 3 3. Use the "Brightness/Contrast" tool to apply the following properties:

Brightness: -25
Contrast: 50

Click OK.


image 4 4. Use the "Perspective" transform tool (Edit> Transform> Perspective) to increase the distance of the top corners.

image 5 5. Add a layer mask (Layer> New Layer Mask> Reveal All) to the current layer.

image 6 6. With the layer mask selected, use the "Apply Image" tool to apply the following properties:

Source: filename
Layer: Merged
Channel: RGB
Invert: Uncheckmarked
Blending: Normal
Opacity: 100%

Click OK.


image 7 7. Create a new layer and apply the "Clouds" filter (Filter> Render> Clouds).

image 8 8. Use the "Perspective" transform tool (Edit> Transform> Perspective) to increase the distance of the top corners.

image 9 9. Add a layer mask (Layer> New Layer Mask> Reveal All) to the current layer. Set the layer's blending mode to "Overlay".

image 10 10. With the current layer's layer mask selected, use the "Apply Image" tool to apply the following properties:

Source: filename
Layer: Layer 1
Channel: RGB
Invert: Checkmarked
Blending: Normal
Opacity: 100%

Click OK.


image 11 11. Create a new layer and apply the "Clouds" filter (Filter> Render> Clouds).

image 12 12. Use the "Perspective" transform tool (Edit> Transform> Perspective) to increase the distance of the top corners.

image 13 13. Use the "Brightness/Contrast" tool to apply the following properties:

Brightness: -50
Contrast: 50

Click OK.


image 14 14. Set the current layer's blending mode to "Screen".

image 15 15. Create a new "Gradient" fill layer (Layer> New Fill Layer> Gradient) above the layer "Background" and apply the following properties:

Gradient: White to Black
Style: Linear
Angle: 90º
Scale: 100%
Reverse: Checkmarked
Dither: Uncheckmarked
Align with layer: Checkmarked

Click OK.


image 16 16. Set the current layer's blending mode to "Screen" and lower the opacity.

Sky Tutorial: Final Result 17. To create a sunset sky, invert (Ctrl+I) the layer "Background".
