Rusted Fence

1. First we have to do is to make the grid we are goind to use for the fence. Start with a new canvas. File > New (Ctrl+N) and set the width and height to 10 pixels, name it Grid. Zoom in to 300%.

Select the Rectangular Marquee Tool (M) and set the style to fixed style. Set the widt to 10 px and height to 2 px.

Make a selection on the top left corner (fig 1). Now set the width to 2 px and the height to 10 px. Hold down the Shift key and make another selection from the same corner (fig 2). Set the foreground color to white and fill the selection. Deselect.

To make a patter go to Select > All (Ctrl+A) and Edit > Define Pattern, name the patter grid and click ok.

2. Now that we have made the pattern is time to start on the fence. Create a new document 200x200, set the colors to default (D) and fill the layer with black. Create a new layer, layer 2. Select the Rectangular Marquee Tool and make a selection a bit smaller that the canvas (remember to set the style back to normal). Fill the selection with the new grid pattern. Deselect.

3. Ctrl click on layer 2 to select the grid and go to Filter > Render Clouds. Click ok and deselect. Then go to Filter > Noise > Add Noise and set the amount to 30 %, choose Gaussian and check Monochromatic.

4. We also awnt to add some colour to the fence. Go to Image > Adjustments > Hue/Saturation and check for Colorize. Now move the handles until you get the result you want, I used 40, 37, 0 in this example.

We also want to "add" some holes to the fence. Select the Eraser Tool and with a hard round brush 19 pixels start erasing some of the pattern in the middle and on the edges of the fence. Go over the holes with a larger soft brush to soften the edges a little bit.

5. For the final touch, duplicate layer 2 and change the blending mode to Color burn.

I also added some Outer Glow with the color set to #996600 and the size to 2px. Layer > Layer Style > Outer Glow.
