3D Text and Check Pattern

This Photoshop tutorial teaches you to create a 3D and glossy Text effect with border. The dimensions used in this tutorial is : width 200px, height 200px and resolution 72px. This tutorial demonstrates the use of Pen Tool, Elliptical and Rectangular Marquee and Brush Tools. This tutorial teaches you to create your own checked pattern that can be used in the design background and give a glossy or wet effect to your text / images using some simple techniques in Photoshop.

3D Text and Check Pattern Tutorial: Final Result

First We will create a Pattern for our design. Make a new document, 9px wide by 9px high with background color as #81817f. Then select the Rectangular Marquee tool image 2 (M) and draw a square of 4 x 4 px. Create a new Layer image 3 . Press Shift + F5 and select the use contents as Black.

Press Ctrl + D and name the layer as Black-1.

Right click on the Black-1 layer in the layer Palette and select Duplicate Layer.

Name the layer as Black-2 and position it as shown below using the Move Tool image 7 .

Select the Rectangular Marquee tool (M) and draw a square of 4 x 4 px. Create a new Layer image 10 . Press Shift + F5 and select the use contents as white.

Press Ctrl + D and name the layer as White-1

Right click on the White-1 layer in the layer Palette and select Duplicate Layer.

Name the layer as White-2 and position it as shown below using the Move Tool .

Select Edit > Define Pattern, give name for your pattern and click Ok. Discard the document.

Create a new document of dimensions 200 x 200 px with white background.

Select the Pen Tool (P) image 18 from the Tool Bar and create a shape of letter "A" as shown in the image below.

Name the layer as A-bg, Right click on this layer in the layers palette and select Rasterize Layer.

Press Ctrl and click on the A-bg layer in the layers palette.

Press Shift + F5 and in the window select the Use contents as Patterns, click the Custom patterns and select the pattern you have just created and click ok. Press Ctrl + D. You should get the design as shown in the image below.

Double click on the A-bg layer in the layer palette or right click and select the Blending Options. In the layer style window select the Stroke option. Set the stroke color to # 81817f, size 1px and position as center.

Next select the Bevel and Emboss option. Set the style to Inner bevel and size as 5px. Set the Highlight and the shadow color to #ffffff and # 000000 respectively and the opacity of the highlight mode to 28%.

Then select the Drop Shadow option and set the Blend mode to multiply, shadow color to #000000. Set the value for the Distance, spread and size as 3px, 3px and 4px respectively. Click Ok.

Press Ctrl and click on the A-bg layer in the layers palette to load the selection. Press Shift + Ctrl + N to create a new layer name it as A and click OK. Change the foreground color to #fd1819 and press Alt + Backspace to fill the selection in the new layer.

With the selection still loaded, press Select > Modify > Contract and in the box type 10 pixels and click OK.

Press Ctrl + Shift + I to inverse the selection and press Del. Your image should look like the one below. Press Ctrl + D.

Select the Elliptical Marquee Tool (M) image 29 from the Tool bar and draw a small oval as shown in the image. Press Del and then press Ctrl + D.

Double Click on the A layer in the layers palette and in the Layer Style window select the Bevel and Emboss. Set the style as Inner Bevel, Depth 101%, Size 16px and soften 2px. Set the Shading angle as -30 and the altitude 21. Select the Log Contour for the Gloss Contour.

Then select the Drop shadow option. Set the shadow color to #f35050, Opacity 100%, angle 90, Spread 3px, size 3px and the contour Half-round.

Next create glossy effect for the design. Press D and then X. Your foreground color will now be set the White. Select the Pen Tool (P) image 33 from the Tool Bar and create a shape as shown in the image below. Name the layer as Glossy.

Right click on the Glossy layer on the layers palette and select Rasterize layer. Then select Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur and set the radius as 2.9 pixels.

Finally to add some finishing touches, select the Eraser Tool image 36 from the Tool Bar and set the Erase options as Mode - Brush, Brush - 4px, Opacity - 10% and Flow - 14%.

Erase some of the white in the Glossy layer as shown in the image below:
