Flaming Text

Add realistic fire behind any text.


image 1 1. Create a new document.

image 2 2. Type in the text that will have flames behind it.

image 3 3. Create a new layer (Ctrl+Shift+N) underneath the text layer.

image 4 4. Make a selection of the text layer (Ctrl+Click on the text layer), expand the selection (Select> Modify> Expand) by 5 to 10 pixels and feather the selection (Ctrl+Alt+D) by 5 to 10 pixels.

image 5 5. With the middle layer selected, apply a "Clouds" filter (Filter> Render> Clouds) to the selection. Deselect (Ctrl+D).

image 6 6. Use the "Liquify" filter to warp the layer so that it looks similar to the image in this step. Use the "Forward Warp Tool" with a large brush size.

image 7 7. Select a smaller brush size and warp the edges to create more detail. Click OK.

image 8 8. On the current layer, use the "Hue/Saturation" tool (Ctrl+U) to apply the following properties:

Hue: 25
Saturation: 100
Lightness: 0

Click OK.


image 9 9. Dupicate the current layer (Ctrl+J) and set the current layer's blending mode to "Color Dodge".

image 10 10. On the new layer, use the "Hue/Saturation" tool (Ctrl+U) to apply the following properties:

Hue: -10
Saturation: 0
Lightness: 0

Click OK.


image 11 11. Create a new layer (Ctrl+Shift+N) as the top layer and apply a "Clouds" filter (Filter> Render> Clouds).

image 12 12. Set the layer's blending mode to "Linear Light" and add a layer mask (Layer> Add layer mask> Reveal All).

image 13 13. With the layer mask selected, use the "Apply Image" tool to apply the following properties:

Source: filename
Layer: Layer 1
Channel: RGB
Invert: Uncheckmarked
Blending: Normal
Opacity: 100%

Click OK.


image 14 14. Invert (Ctrl+I) the layer mask.

image 15 15. With the layer mask selected, use the "Brightness/Contrast" tool to apply the following properties:

Brightness: -25
Contrast: 75

Click OK.
