1. First, we're going to make a custom rusty pattern to use with the layer style. Make a new layer, set your foreground color to orange and background to black, then go to Filter>Clouds, click OK.
2. Now go to Filter>Add Noise..Use 5.5% for the Amount, select guassian and monochramic boxes, click OK when done.
3. Apply Sponge filter by going to Filter>Artistic>Sponge, use default settings, press OK.
4. Now we need to add some depth to our texture so it doesn't look too flat. Firstly, go ahead and copy your layer. With Layer 1 Duplicate active go to Filter>Stylize>Emboss. Set Height to 3 and Amount to 90%, click OK.
5. Set your Layer 1 Duplicate mode to Overlay and then add Noise by going to Filter>Noise>Add Noise, use about 8% for the amount and check guassian and monochramic boxes. Click OK.
6. If you want light up your texture a little bit, then make a new layer and use big, soft airbrush to paint over your texture in some spots. When done painting set your painting layer mode to Overlay. Before making a new pattern we need to flatten our image (make it all on one layer) so go to Layer>Flatten Image..to make it one layer.
Finally, save your custom pattern by going to Edit>Define Pattern, name it "Rusty". Your custom rusty pattern is now complete! Move on to the next step to make a layer style out of it.
7. To make a layer style with your rusty pattern, first make a new layer. Now go to Layer>Layer Style>Pattern Overlay...Select your pattern among other patterns, it should be the last one at the bottom.
8. Click on Bevel and Emboss check box at the left. Adjust your Bevel and Emboss settings as shown above.
9. If you like, you may also add some Drop Shadow, ussually layer style will look better with the drop shadow. Adjust it as shown above, then click OK to finish editing your Layer Style.
10. To save your layer style, open up your Styles window and roll your mouse over an empty layer styles spot, when your mouse pointer arrow turns to the paintbucket tool, click once to make a new layer style. Name your layer style "Rusty". You will see your new layer style appear in the layer style window!
From now on, you can use your own layer style on anything you want with just one button click, if you want to apply it on text, simply type some text then click once on your layer style in the layer style window. You can also apply it on shapes or anything else.
