Text with Solar Wind

1. Create a new 300x300 pixel document with a resolution of 100 and name it Solar Wind. Now press D and fill the document (with Black). Then create a new layer and name it 'text'. Next, create a horizontal type mask, press X and then fill (with white).

2. Now, copy the layer with the text in it and name the copied layer 'lighting effects'. Select the 'lighting effects' layer and make the text distort to polar coordinates with settings [Polar to Rectangular selected].

3. Next we are going to add the 'solar wind' to your image. Add wind with settings [Wind selected, and From the Left]. The press Ctrl-F (applies the wind filter a second time). Then rotate the canvas 180° and apply the wind filter (twice again) with same settings. Rotate the canvas 90° CW again and apply the wind filter (twice again) with same settings. Finally for the last time rotate the canvas 90° CW and your back to the start.

4. Now distort to polar coordinates with settings [Rectangular to Polar selected]. Now select the 'text' layer and drag it up above the 'lighting effects' layer. Your layer order should look like this:

Now with the 'text' layer selected Preserve its Transparency. Then press D and fill. Then drag the text layer up so it appears at the top and above the 'lighting effects' layer.

5. Lastly, you can add some color by creating a new layer. Then fill it with a color of your choice. Then change the blending mode to 'color'. You want to make sure that this 'color' layer appears at the top of the layer list in the layers window. Voila!
