Why do so many of us like watching horror films? Perhaps due to the dose of adrenalin we get in the peace of our homes or movie theaters when watching things like "The ring" - one of the most eminent recent trailers of the genre. I bet the thing you remembered the best were the TV screen shots, with the girl climbing out of it. This horror-inspiring creature came as an inspiration for me to write this tutorial.

Originally, I had an idea of drawing a simple TV and then animating its screen, but then I changed my mind and decided to create a more quality-looking appliance to work with. So, the tutorial will consist of 2 parts, the first one devoted to drawing of the TV set and the second one to animating it.

Let's start with the retro TV. I thought the retro style would better match the spirit of the movie.

Create a new 400x400px document with a white background. Set the #8E8E8E foreground color, select Rounded Rectangle Tool with 10px radius and draw a square in the bottom-central part of the canvas. Go to Blending Options and add Bevel and Emboss with the settings as shown on the picture below, and also Contour with Range 50%, AA unchecked.

This is the TV carcass, which will look the following way:

TV-Base

Select the background layer, set foreground color #616161 and then choose Ellipse tool. In the upper middle part, draw 30 х 60 ellipse, so that half of it is on top of the TV set. Then add Bevel and Emboss with the same settings you used for the carcass. After that, add Texture with the following settings:

This is the basis for the aerial, or antennae pedestal. This is how it's supposed to look like:

Antenna-Base

Select Line tool from the top part of the antennae pedestal, draw 2 lines going up in 2 different directions practically to the utmost top of the canvas. To intensify the color, you can add Inner Shadow to each of the lines.

This is what you should get :

Not the time has come of the TV screen. Select the #FFFFFF foreground color, choose the Rounded Rectangle Tool with the same radius and draw a white rectangle in the left of the screen. Enhance it with Bevel and Emboss with the following settings:

The screen is ready:

Now let's go to the loud speaker. Create new layer. Select a circle in the bottom right corner of the set using the Rounded Rectangle Tool. Then apply the Clouds filter, and after that the Patchwork filter with Square Size: 10, Relief: 7. Ffter that add Stroke with the following settings:

And the loud speaker is done:

The power button is clearly missing, so let's go about making it. Set the foreground color to #2D2D2D. In the top right part of the TV frame, draw a little rectangle approximately 12x7px in size using the Rectangle tool. Add such Blending Options as Stroke, and Bevel and Emboss:

Having selected the red color for the Line tool, draw a vertical line in the center of the button, so that it's almost touching the edges of the button.

The remaining parts belong to the control panel - channel switch, brightness and volume control, etc. Select #CCCCCC color and using the Rectangle tool draw a rectangle under the button, just a bit wider than the loud speaker. After that, add Bevel and Emboss with the following settings:

Bevel-and-Emboss-Control

This is how your result should look like:

TV-Control-Panel

Create a new layer. Using the Elliptical Marquee tool, draw an 11x11px circle in the bottom part of the control panel. Fill it with #434343 color, then add Bevel and Emboss with the same settings you used for the power button. After that, duplicate it twice and using the Move tool place the 3 switches evenly along the lower part of the control panel.

TV-3-Control

Create a new layer and using the Elliptical Marquee tool, select a one pixel line in the center of one of the buttons - from top to bottom of the button. After that, turn the black line in any direction with the help of the Free Transform tool. Repeat this for each of the buttons.

TV-3-Control-Buttons

Now on to the channel switch buttons. Select Hard Round 5px brush. In the Brushes settings, set the spacing to 300% and tick Smoothing.

Create a new layer and holding down the Shift button, draw 2 lines in the top and the central parts of the control panel (buttons will appear).

TV-Final

That's it for now, The TV set is set to go. In the next part, I'll show you how to add the girl from the movie there.
