Custom Gloss Contours with G Loomis Skeleton Fish

Whether you are into fishing or not, this is such a cool graphic. I have always wondered why they have not created a huge variety of graphics for this logo. I guess we will have to give them a jump start.

I will start with the picture below. Copy and paste it into your Photoshop document if you are playing along.

The first thing we will want to do is take all of the pieces of the fish, and put them on their own layer. If your picture is labeled as background in the layers palette, double click on the layer, and then click "ok" to change it into a standard layer. Click on the Magic Wand (hotkey W). Making sure that you have the settings as shown below, click on each piece of the fish. You may have to zoom in a bit to get the teeth.

After all the pieces are selected, choose Select/Inverse from the menu bar, and hit delete. You should end up with something like this.

Add a new layer underneath the fish layer and fill it with white. Well, you can fill it with whatever you like, I am going to use white.

Next we will be using the Blending Options window to add some Drop Shadow, Inner Shadow and Bevel and Emboss. Make sure that the fish layer is selected and choose Layer/Layer Style/Blending Options. In the Bevel and Emboss area we will be creating some custom gloss contours. Here are the settings I am starting with.

At this point you should have something like this.

I think this actually looks pretty cool as it is, but I am going to go one step further and give it a more rounded glossy contour. I am not finding any of the pre loaded contours to get what I am looking for, so we will have to make our own. We will need to go back to the Bevel and Emboss area of the Blending Options window. Where it shows the "Gloss Contour" box, double click it to open the Contour Editor.

When creating a new contour, you click on the existing contour line and then drag it into the position you want. It works similar to the pen tool as far as dragging. It should be pretty apparent how it works while you are playing with it. When you click on the line you create an anchor point. If you do not want the anchor point to curve on your next click, check the "Corner" box. Here is the curve I would like you to try to achieve. Keep trying if you don't get it at first.

Don't forget to move your image aside while you are changing these contours. They actually change in real time and you can tweak it just how you want it. This is what I ended up with.

One more thing to mess with and have fun with is the "Color Overlay" in the Blending Options window. I chose a burnt orange color (CC6600) and this is what happened. A little color really brings out the new custom gloss contour. If you like this layer style you can save it apply it with just a click next time. I think G Loomis will be coming to our doors to do Photoshop graphics for them! Fish on!
