Drawing an Apple iMac in Photoshop

I was fooling around with some stuff in Photoshop the other day, and I wanted to see how realistic of an iMac I could make. I got it to the point where my family members had trouble deciding which was the real one. Here's an in-depth tutorial on how to draw an Apple iMac in Photoshop.

First, create a new 800x600 document with a white background. Then select the Rounded Rectangle Tool (U). You may need to right-click on the icon to select the right tool. Also set the radius to 20px, which can be done at the top of the screen while the Rounded Rectangle Tool is selected.

Now draw a black rounded rectangle on a new layer. Click the image below to see where and about how big you should make it.

Double click on the layer to open the Blending Options window. Select Stroke, and use these settings:

Next, copy next image, the Mac OSX wallpaper, and paste it on to your image.

It should automatically be on a new layer. Go back to the layer with the rounded rectangle on it, and center it on the document by selecting the Move Tool (V), selecting the entire image (Ctrl+A), and pressing the Align Horizontal Centers button. Do the same with the blue wallpaper layer.

Now, you may need to trim or extend your rectangle. Select a bit less than half of the rectangle on the right or left side, hold in the Control key, and use the left and right arrow keys to move the selection in or out. If you're extending the width of the rectangle, deselect (Ctrl+D) and make a smaller selection of the black, near the center. Then press Ctrl+T (Free Transform) and drag the center point to cover the area.

Finally, invert the rectangle by pressing Ctrl+I. Here's what you should have (I made the stroke a bit darker so you could see the margins, click for larger image):

To add some depth to the screen, double click the wallpaper's layer again to open the Blending Options window. Select Outer Glow, and use these settings:

Create a new layer above the monitor layer. Set the foreground color to #f1f6fa, and select the Magic Wand Tool (W). With that, select the monitor by clicking on it. Go back to the new layer without deselecting.

Select the 100px soft Brush tool (B), and set the brush Opacity level to 50%. Then lightly brush within the selection, leaving the part towards the top white. Brush a little more at the lower corners/bottom edge. We're trying to create a 3D effect. When you're finished, your image should look similar to this:

Copy next image of the Apple logo and paste it on your image.

Use the same centering technique as before to center it. Then vertically center it between the bottom of the screen and the bottom of the monitor. Open the Blending Options window for this layer, select Inner Shadow and Gradient Overlay, and use the following settings:

You should now have the engraved Apple logo on your monitor.

Select the line tool (U). You'll most likely have to right-click on the Rounded Rectangle Tool icon to select it. Set the weight to 3px and the color to black. On a new layer above the Apple logo, draw a horizontal line that is the length of the blue screen over the bottom edge of the monitor. When you're finished, center it with the Move Tool (same as before) and open up that layer's Blending Options window. Select Gradient Overlay and use these settings:

Finally, set the layer opacity level to 50%. You should now have a small bar running across the bottom of the monitor.

Here comes the tough part - drawing the stand. We'll be using the Pen Tool for this. I suggest that you use next template to draw the stand - doing it freehand is hard to do.

image 15

Select the Pen Tool and zoom into 200-300%. Paste the template from the link above on a new layer below the monitor layer, center it with the Move tool (M), and then move it so that the top is connected to the monitor.

Start placing points around the black stand template, using curves when needed. It doesn't matter what color you use.

When you're done, press the Return key.

Right-click on the layer (it should be named 'Shape 1') and select 'Rasterize Layer'. Then double click on the same layer to open up the blending options window. Select 'Gradient Overlay' and use these settings (click for larger image):

Do the same with the Pen Tool using next template.

Place the template under the main part of the stand so that it connects without any spaces in between (see second image below). Use the Gradient Overlay again with these settings (note the angle change to 0):

This step is completely optional and will not effect the quality of your iMac. Select the Text Tool (T) and type in the color black 'iMac' in the font Myriad Pro at 100px size, smooth anti-aliasing, and a semibold weight. If you don't have the font Myriad Pro, here's how you can get it:

Go into the system folder for Adobe Acrobat Reader, which you should have (most likely at C:/Program Files/Adobe/Acrobat Reader). Open up the 'Resources' folder, and then click 'Fonts'. Copy all of the Myriad fonts to your fonts folder.

After you type 'iMac', center it and place it a 15-20px below the bottom of the stand. Now type '2x faster. Twice as amazing.' in grey at 18px, and center it below iMac. You now have a very realistic iMac.
