Ghost in Monitor


Change an image into a surveillance camera's image and simulate a scene in "The Grudge".


image 1 1. Open the image for editing.

image 2 2. Duplicate the current layer (Ctrl+J) and set its blending mode to "Overlay".

image 3 3. Duplicate the top layer (Ctrl+J) and invert (Ctrl+I).

image 4 4. Add a new "Hue/Saturation" adjustment layer (Layer> New Adjustment Layer> Hue/Saturation) and set the saturation to "-100". Click OK.

image 5 5. Add a new "Brightness/Contrast" adjustment layer (Layer> New Adjustment Layer> Brightness/Contrast) as the top layer and apply the following properties:

Brightness: 25
Contrast: 50

Click OK.


image 6 6. Add a new "Photo Filter " adjustment layer (Layer> New Adjustment Layer> Photo Filter) as the top layer and apply the following properties:

Filter: Cooling Filter (82)
Density: 50%

Click OK.


image 7 7. Create a new 100x100 pixels document with a white background. Use the "Rectangular Marquee" tool (M) to select the top 50 pixels of the document and fill the selection with black.

image 8 8. Select the canvas (Ctrl+A) then define the selection as a pattern (Edit> Define Pattern). Name this pattern "Scanline". Click OK.

image 9 9. Close the current document and go back to the document you've started with. Add a new "Pattern Fill " fill layer (Layer> New Fill Layer> Pattern Fill) as the top layer and apply the following properties:

Pattern: Scanline
Scale: 3%
Link with Layer: Checkmarked

Click OK.


image 10 10. Set the opacity of the new fill layer to "10%".

image 11 11. Create a new layer (Ctrl+Shift+N) under the "Hue/Saturation" adjustment layer.

image 12 12. Use the brush tool (B) and set the hardness to 0%. Select a "Master Diameter" to paint with.

image 13 13. Paint a figure with the colour black in the current layer.

image 14 14. Apply a "Gaussian Blur" filter (Filter> Blur> Gaussian Blur) with a value that will blur the edges.

image 15 15. Create a new layer (Ctrl+Shift+N) under the current layer.

Ghost in Monitor Tutorial: Final Result 16. Paint a shadow on the ground with the brush tool. Rollover the image in this step to see the original image before this technique was applied.
