Learn How To Create A Nintendo WiiU From Scratch In Photoshop

The new Nintendo WiiU was recently revealed at the E3 gaming conference boasting new ways in which we play our games. Now you can create your very own WiiU in photoshop using this detailed tutorial. The tutorial itself is very "Layer Style" heavy so set a side a good two or three hours to complete it.

What We'll Be Creating

Img

Creating The WiiU Base

Create a new (Ctrl + N) document 1920 x 1290 pixels with any colored background. Select the "Rounded Rectangle Tool" (U) with a path type of "Shape Layers" and a radius of 200px.

Img

Drag out a rectangle which near enough fills the canvas area.

Img

To the WiiU base add the following layer styles.

Img

Img

Img

The WiiU base should look something like this.

Img

Were now going to create the base shadow, duplicate the WiiU base layer then drag the duplicated layer underneath the original layer. Right click the duplicated layer and select "Clear Layer Styles" from the fly out menu, once the styles have been cleared double click the vector mask and change the color to black #000000.

Img

Once the color has been changed blur the shape by going to "Filter - Blur - Guassian Blur", you will be asked to rasterize the layer so press okay when promoted to do so. Blur the shape by 4 pixels then move the shape down a couple of pixels until you have something like this.

Img

Creating The Shoulder Buttons

Select the "Pen Tool" (P) then on a layer underneath the WiiU layer create a shape like the image below.

Img

Once you have completed the shape duplicate the layer and go to "Edit - Transform - Flip Horizontal". Move (V) the duplicated shape over to right side of the base shape. Once positioned add the following layer styles to both shoulder button layers.

The shoulder buttons should look something like this.

Creating The Camera

Select the "Rounded Rectangle Tool" (U) then in the middle of the WiiU at the top drag out a decent sized rectangle, once the rectangle has been added select the "Ellipse Tool" (U) and add an ellipse in the center of the rectangle.

Img

To the rounded rectangle add the following layer styles.

To the ellipse add the following layer styles.

The rectangle and ellipse should look something like this.

Img

We now need to build up the camera by repeatedly adding new circles inside of each other. Each new circle should be smaller than the last one, if you duplicate the circle layer then hold down shift and alt on the keyboard whilst in "Free Transform Mode" (Ctrl + T) then the circles will resize from the middle instead of from the anchor point in which you are dragging. Go ahead and create 3 more circles using the "Ellipse Tool" (U).

Img

Add a "Color Overlay" to the "Circle #1" layer using the settings below.

Img

To the "Circle #2" add the following layer styles.

Img

Finally to the last circle add the following layer styles.

Img

Img

The camera lens should now be complete and look something like this.

Img

Now select the "Pen Tool" (P) and make a diagonal selection across the camera rectangle. Make sure the path is on a new layer underneath the camera circle layers.

Img

Once the path has been made, fill the path with white #ffffff and blur it by going to "Filter - Blur - Guassian Blur". The blur amount should be around 4-5px. Once you have added the guassian blur the excess will need to be trimmed away to do this first "Load A Selection" around the camera rectangle layer "Layer - Load Selection" then go to "Select - Inverse" and hit the delete key. Finally set the opacity to around 15%.

Img

Creating The Thumb Sticks

Select the "Ellipse Tool" (U) then on the left side of the WiiU base create 3 circles on top of each other, each circle needs to decrease in size.

Img

The 3 circles will make up the thumbstick, to the biggest circle (Circle #1) add the following layer styles.

Img

Img

Img

"Circle #1" should look something like this.

Img

Now add the following layer styles to "Circle #2".

Img

Img

"Circle #2" should look like this.

Img

Finally to complete the thumbstick add the following layer styles to "Circle #3".

Img

Img

Img

Img

Once the final circle is finished duplicate the 3 layers and move (V) them the duplicated layers over to the right side of the canvas.

Img

Creating The Screen

Select the "Rounded Rectangle Tool" (U) with a radius of 10px. Drag out the screen in the middle of the WiiU base.

Img

Once you've created the rectangle add the following layer styles.

Img

Img

Img

Img

You should have something like this.

Img

Still with the "Rounded Rectangle Tool" (U) create yet another rectangle only this time make it slightly smaller than the first.

Img

Now add the following layer styles to the second rectangle.

The screen should now be finished and look something like this.
