Light-Polluted Earth

image 1 16. Select the layer with the dots and add a layer mask (Layer> Add Layer Mask> Reveal All).

image 2 17. With the layer mask selected, use the "Apply Image" tool to apply the following properties:

Source: filename
Layer: Layer 3
Channel: RGB
Invert: Uncheckmarked
Blending: Normal
Opacity: 100%

Click OK.


image 3 18. Move the top layer below the layer with the dots and add a layer mask (Layer> Add Layer Mask> Reveal All).

image 4 19. With the layer mask selected, use the "Apply Image" tool to apply the following properties:

Source: filename
Layer: Layer 3
Channel: RGB
Invert: Uncheckmarked
Blending: Normal
Opacity: 100%

Click OK.


image 5 20. Select "Layer 2" and fill the circle with a blue. For this step I've used the colour #008ED9.

image 6 21. With "Layer 2" selected, apply an "Inner Shadow" layer style (Layer> Layer Style> Inner Shadow) with the following properties:

Blend Mode: Multiply
Color: Black
Opacity: 75%
Angle: -29º
Use Global Light: Checkmarked
Distance: 100
Choke: 6
Size: 100

Click OK.


image 7 22. On the current layer, apply a "Gradient Overlay" layer style (Layer> Layer Style> Gradient Overlay) with the following properties:

Blend Mode: Screen
Opacity: 100%
Gradient: Black to White
Reverse: Checkmarked
Style: Radial
Align with Layer: Uncheckmarked
Angle: 90º
Scale: 100%

Click OK.


image 8 23. Make a selection of "Layer 2" inverse, select "Layer 3" layer mask, press "Delete" to delete the white dots in the selection and "Deselect" (Ctrl+D).

image 9 24. Select "Layer 3" and use the "Hue/Saturation" tool (Ctrl+U) to apply the following properties:

Colorize: Checkmarked
Hue: 124
Saturation: 68
Lightness: -50

Click OK.


image 10 25. Select the current layer's layer mask and use the "Brightness/Contrast" tool (Image> Adjustment> Brightness/Contrast) to apply the following properties:

Brightness: 25
Contrast: 75

Click OK.


image 11 26. Create a new layer as the top layer and fill it with the colour black.

image 12 27. Apply a "Lens Flare" filter on the new layer with the following properties:

Brightness: 100%
Lens Type: 50-300mm Zoom

Click OK.


image 13 28. Set the current layer's blending mode to "Screen" and use the "Move" tool (V) to align the lens flare to the top left edge of the planet.

image 15 30. Select "Layer 1" layer mask and use the "Eraser" tool (E) to erase over the areas that you do not want the light pollution to appear.

Light-Polluted Earth Tutorial: Final Result 31. Create a new "Hue/Saturation" adjustment layer (Layer> New Adjustment Layer> Hue/Saturation) above the first three layers. Decrease the "Saturation" and "Lightness" and click OK.
