In this tutorial you will learn how to make this signature.

Pirates of the Carribean Tutorial: Final Result

First I made a new document which was 410x130 px, then I found a nice stock image on Google and put it into my signature (saved it, opened it in photoshop and with the movie tool dragged it from the stock image document to the signature document) and resized it by pressing Ctrl+T and resizing it.

Next I got out a splatter brush (they can be found on www.devianart.com) and with the settings below, and the smudge tool (if you are unsure on how to get the settings so, go to Windows>>Brushes), I smudged it all a little bit on the left side.

image 5

Now on that same layer I just smudged< I got out the 100px softy brush eraser (go to Reset Brushes if you can't find it in your brush list, and then go to the one with the circle that sort of fades out on the edges and has 100 underneath it) and erased most of the sig but the left side, like below. I then set it to soft light at 100% opacity.

After

image 7

Now I made a new layer, and went to Image>>Apply Image. Then I went to Filter>>brush Strokes>>Spatter and made spray radius 13, and smoothness 8. I then went to Distort>>Glass and made distortion 10, smoothness 11, texture as frosted, and scaling at 94%. Once I did that, I set the layer to lighten at 55% opacity, and with the 100px soft brush eraser, I erased the main part of the sig, which I wanted to be person in this case.

image 8

After

image 9

Next I made a new layer and went to image>>Apply image again. and went to Filter>>Distort>>Ripple with it at 100%. Then I went to Filter>>Distort>>Ocean Ripple with ripple size 10 and ripple magnitude at 9. Then I set the layer to lighten at 56% opacity, and with the 100px soft brush eraser, I erased the main part like before.

Before

image 10

After

image 11

Next I made a new layer, and within the brush tool and a 100-200px soft brush on white, I brushed a little bit where the light was on mine, or just where you want to stand out some more, then I set the layer to soft light at 60% opacity.

Before

image 12

After

image 13

I then made another new layer and went to image>>Apply Image and then Filter>>Brush Strokes>>Ink outlines and with stroke length on 4, dark intensity on 8 and light intensity on 6. Then I set the layer to lighten on 25% opacity, and once again erased the main part.

Before

image 14

After

image 15

Now i made a new layer, and went to Image>>Apply Image again, and the Filter>>Distort>>Wave. Hit the randomize button a few times until you get something you like. i then set the layer to lighten at 28%, and erased the main part.

Before

image 16

After

image 17

I then made another new layer and went to Image>>Apply Image and then Filter>>Distort>>Wave and hit a randomize a few times, I erased the main part and set it to overlay at 39% opacity.

Before

image 18

After

image 19

Next I went to Layer>>New adjustment layer>>Gradient map and did a black/white one like below 9click the little drop down arrow on the side to see all the gradients). I then kept the layer on normal, but lowered the opacity to 37%.

image 20

image 21

Once again I made a new layer and went to Image>>Apply Image and then went to Filter>>Brush Strokes>>Spatter and kept the same settings as before. Then I erased the main part, and put it on lighten at 50% opacity.

Before

image 22

After

image 23

Again made a new layer, Image>>Apply Image, Filter>>Distort>>Ripple, Filter>>Distort>>Ocean Ripple (both should be on the same settings as before), erased the main part, and then I set the layer to overlay at 62%.

Before

image 24

After

image 25

Next I made a new layer and with a 400-500px soft brush on white, I brushed at the bottom of main part just to add some lighting. I then set the layer to soft light and on 100% opacity.

Before

image 26

After

image 27

Next, on a new layer and with the Pencil tool on 5px and a light yellow, I drew two squiggly lines around my render sort of, I then set to overlay at 18% opacity.

Before

image 28

After

image 29

Now on a layer and with the pencil tool now on 1px, with that same light yellow, draw a rough outline of the main part of your sig, the person in mine. Then set the layer to soft light.

Before

image 30

After

image 31

Next with the marquee tool, I selected over the left side where the Pencil was, and pressed ctrl+J to duplicate that part, then with the arrow keys I moved it over about 5-10px left, or whatever direction your going in to get the same sort of effect, and then kept it on soft light and made the opacity at 65% this time. Soft of going for the effect that the further from the main part, the less visible it is.

image 32

I then duplicated that layer and moved it another 5-10px to the left, and lowered the opacity to 45%.

image 33

I then did the same steps for the right one, but moved it right and not left.

image 34

Then made a new layer and went to Image>>Apply image, then Filter>>Brush Strokes>>Spatter with the same settings as before. I erased the main part and set it to lighten at 49% opacity.

Before

image 35

After

image 36

Then again made a new layer and went Image>>Apply Image, then Filter>>Ripple, then Filter>>Ocean Ripple (both at same settings as before) and then Filter>>Liquify and added a nice touch to it, you will noticed it in the left side of the signature. Then set the layer to lighten at 75% opacity.

Before

image 37

After

image 38

Once again made a new layer, Image>>Apply Image, and then I went to Filter>>Brush Strokes>>Ink Outlines the same settings as before, I set the layer to lighten at 52% opacity, and erased the main part.

Before

image 39

After

image 40

I then added another black and white gradient map like before by going to Layer>>New adjustment layer>>Gradient map. I set it to screen at 20% opacity.

image 41

I made a new layer, and with a 400-500px white soft brush, I did the same as before and brush a little bit at the bottom of my render for lighting, I then set it to soft light at 100% opacity.

Before

image 42

After

image 43

I then went to Layer>>New adjustment layer>>Brightness/contrast and made brightness -2 and contrast +19.

image 44

Next I went to Layer>>Nw adjustment layer>>Photo Filter and used these settings. I made that layer normal at 71% opacity.

Photo Filter

image 45

image 46

I then used an effect that's pretty common in sigs. I made a new layer and went to Image>>Apply Image, then Filter>>Sharpen>>Sharpen, and then Edit>>Fade Sharpen (but only if needed). then I duplicated that layer by pressing Ctrl+J or going Layer>>Duplicate layer. Then I went to Filter>>Blur>>gaussian Blur, and made it 2-3px, then I set the layer to lighten at 41% opacity, but no erasing was needed.

image 47

I then went to Layer>>New adjustment layer>>Gradient amp and added the purple/orange one (shown below) which is in the defaults. I made it soft light at 22% opacity.

Gradient Map

image 48

image 49

Next I made a new layer, and with a 100-200 px white soft brush, I brushed along the bottom to lighten it up, I then made the layer normal at 24% opacity.

Before

image 50

After

image 51

I then added my text, but it wasn't so great, so I'm gonna leave this up to you, because I suck at text.

image 52

An then finally I added my border by making a new layer, and pressing Ctrl+A to select all, or go to Select>>All. Then I went to Edit>>Stroke and made it black and 3 px, don't worry about the rest. I then zoomed in and deleted the sides with the marquee tool, and then pressed Ctrl+A again to select all, and then, fade it black and 1px this time.
