Sea Ship Painting


Through this Photoshop tutorial you will learn to create Sea Ship painting using some simple Photoshop Tools.The dimensions used in this tutorial is : width 400px, height 400px and resolution 72px. This tutorial demonstrates the use of Pen, Brush, Smudge and Burn Tools. You will exclusively use the brush tool to create most of the painting and learn to add effect using the Smudge and Burn tools. From this painting you will learn to create clouds, lake and a Boat and how give Water color effect to your Painting.

Create a new document of dimensions 400 x 400 px with white background.

First we will create the sky / clouds for our painting. Press Ctrl + Shift + N to create a new layer, name the layer as Clouds and press OK. Select the Brush Tool (B) image 2 from the Brush options select the Soft Brush of 12px diameter and make some strokes on the canvas as shown in the image. I have used 3 different colors for the strokes #b2b1d9, #bcb1ca and #e2e4f1.

Select the Smudge Tool (R) image 4 and from the brush options select the Spray Brush of 14px diameter and set the strength to 47%. Make circular movements with the cursor on the strokes in both clock wise and anti-clock wise directions.

Try to be careful while blending 2 colors, make smaller movements with the cursor and work more on the side / edges of the strokes. Your clouds should look like the one in the image below. You can use the Burn Tool (O) image 6 to darken some of the areas in the clouds.

Next we will create the lake. Press Ctrl + Shift + N to create a new layer, name the layer as Lake and press OK. Select the Brush Tool (B) image 2 and make some strokes on the canvas as shown in the image. I have used 2 different colors for the water #6e7485 and #95a3ae for the lake.

Select the Smudge Tool (R) image 4 and make some rough movements with the cursor on the strokes in both directions (left to right and vice versa) until you have some thing like this.

Goto Filter > Noise > Add Noise. Set the Amount to 1%, Distribution to Gaussian and select the Monochromatic option.

Then select the Clouds layer and press Ctrl + F to apply the noise filter to the clouds layer.

Next we will create a Boat. Select the Pen Tool (P) image 14 (I have used a pen tool to get a perfect shape, you can also use brush tool) and create a shape of the boat. Set the foreground color to #401f1c and press Alt + Backspace to fill the color to the Boat.

Name this layer as Boat. Right click on the Boat layer and select Rasterize layer. Goto Filter > Noise > Add Noise and set the Noise amount to 10%.

Goto Filter > Blur > Motion Blur and set the angle to 0 and Distance to 3px.

We will next create the sails and other parts for the Boat. Create a new layer. Select the Brush Tool (B) image 2 from the Brush options select the hard Brush of 1px diameter and make some strokes on the boat as shown in the image. I have used the colors #ffffff (white) and #401f1c (Brown) to create the strokes.

Set the foreground color to #cdc2ca and using Brush Tool (B) image 2 create the mast for the boat (Press Shift button to make the Brush move straight).

Set the foreground color to #ffffff and using Brush Tool (B) image 2 create the 1st Sail for the boat. Name the layer as sail1.

Similarly create 3 more sails as shown in the image below:

Our painting is almost done now. We will finally create some shading to the sails and create string for our sails. Change the foreground color to #d9dfee and select the Brush Tool (B) image 2 from the Brush options select the soft Brush of 10px diameter and make some strokes on the sails.

Select the Smudge Tool (R) image 4 and smoothen the strokes.

Goto Filter > Noise > Add Noise. Set the Noise amount to 1.5%.

Goto Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur. Set the radius to 2px.

Finally create some strings to tie the sails to the mast using Brush Tool (B) image 2 from the Brush options select the hard Brush of 1px diameter and the color #ffffff.
