1. Create a new document and go to a new gradient and click to change it's colors. You should place the colors I used below :)

2. New layer "smiley
main".
Now create a circle with your eliptical marquee tool (I held
shift to make it a perfect circle, and I gave it a diameter
of 20pixels which is about the same size as the MSN emoticons.
So create the circle, and with the linear gradient draw a
line from top left to bottom right like you see I did below.
Results may differ in this tutorial so don't cry :)
3. Now go layer - layer styles and give it a 1 px stroke, outside with the color of the darkest part of your circle.
4. Now make a new layer and call it "eyes". This is where your creativity can show, and only your fantasy can stop you. On this first smiley, I want you to do EXACTLY what I do, to teach you how to do it :) The image below is like 600% it's actual site, showing you how I did it. The thing with these small things is called antialiasing, that I like to create with my pencil tool with a 1 px brush. First I create, using black as foreground color, 25% opacity, the eyes (the right, the top, the left and the bottom), then with a 15% brush I make the "corners" to make it look more antialiased :P
5. Fill
in the bottom parts of the eyes with a very dark yellow, almost
black, something like (#2C2B04).
Now you're done with the eyes.
6.Now use the exact same prosedure as in step 4 to create the mouth, 25% opacity and 15%.
7.l in the mouth with the dark yellow and create some teeth if you like. NOW you're done, and you have the knowledge to create your own, unique smilies, that are way cooler than mine, because I suck and because creating something similar to mine is just blah.
