In this tutorial we will learn how to create a brushed grunge text effect similar to the one below. This effect took me about 5 minutes to think about and make and as you can see, the outcome looks pretty cool.
1. Open up a new document, about 500x500 should be fine.
2. Type in something using the text tool and whatever font you want.
I'll type in grunge is cool for the hell of it using Tahoma, bold, size 48 to give room for the effects, and in the color black. This color won't matter as we will end up deleting the text layer.
3. Ctrl+click on the text layer to select it and then delete the text layer. Don't deselect yet. I would save the selection in case you happen to loose it by going to Select >> Save selection then name your selection Text Selection.
4. After you delete text layer, you can start brushing over your selection. Pick a few brushes, create a new layer and begin brushing.
Start with black on your first layer, on the second use white. Create as many layers as you wish but alternate the colors. Your text should be selected.
5. Merge all your brushed layers by either selecting the arrow with the circle around it and scrolling down the flatten image or by pressing Ctrl+E.
6. Now, you will want to Ctrl+click your layer with the text on it to select it again. If it isn't.
7. Go to "Create New Adjustment Layer" which is on the bottom of your layers palette and choose color balance. Change the color to your liking. I picked up a reddish color.
8. Now a 1 px stroke around the text should finish it. You can add other effects as well if you wish.
