Now create your text. Photoshop wasn't the best at this and often you had to layout text in Illustrator or InDesign. In Photoshop CS you can now type within a path. First you would create a rectangular path and then type within and then you would have advanced options such as justification to get your text just right.

Note that this text is just from another tutorial and not the compelling 'I'm gonna buy this movie action debriefing'.

Create some more text entering something like 'special feature'. Use the advanced type tools you have such as tracking to stretch out the spacing of text. Doing this creates an elegant effect. The further you stretch it = the somehow more elegant it becomes.

Use the line tool on Shapes layer mode with a stroke of 1 and foreground of white and place it right beneath the text.

Because it is a shape layer, it has it's vector path visible until you click off of the layer and onto another layer.
Did you know that you must always be one SOME layer in any document? Now see how important layers are!?

To further complement and complete the design you need to add some more text in teensy little font sizes. Why? It's just common sense and industry standard. You wouldn't want the legal crap as the motivating pre-sell. But by doing things like this and taking time on your typography you can start to emulate the best of the best in the industry and NOW. They all do it so why shouldn't you:?! Now you know. This one line is just for an example.

This also...is for example (thank goodness, it's in Martian). In typography for this design you want to think 'complimentary' and legible. Don't be using cursive text for the teensy type. Change the playing time to a different font (ie. Arial) than the legal 'copy' or the trademark industry standard movie text (which shows all of the production, key crew members, cast, etc.). You'll probably see this in other tutorials but I'm hungry so you won't get to see it here.

And here you go: you've now learned something that no one else would teach you even if you could find someone and begged them to. Knowledge is power and you've got the skills now to go out and produce your own product packaging designs. If your client requests these of you, they will give you the exact specs (measurements, resolution, etc.) and you may have to be responsible for proofing them also (comparing temp-final comps/prints to the original design to ensure utmost quality and resolution).

DVD Back Package Tutorial: Final Result

But can you now see how you can pull together a design like this that may have been out of your reach before?! It's not that hard but keep learning and expanding your skillset. I highly recommend (this shameless Photoshop Designer plug and..) studying your entire DVD/VHS collection (and magazines) and just break apart the design mentally, and be thinking how you can use certain tools and processes in Photoshop to create similar effects on your own. What can be produced in graphic design (with Photoshop of course) and your imagination is unlimited so arm yourself with maximum knowledge and entrench yourself in the good stuff.  If you really want to learn how to do product design and fashion advertising design then go to my new AdvancedPhotoshop.com
