No Smoking in Photoshop

This Photoshop tutorial is a simple photoshop tutorial explaining you how to create an icon like this. You will either have to draw your own cigarette in Photoshop or Illustrator or just use the cigarette I made in Illustrator.

Just right click the image and save it as a png. That way it should be transparent. Or you can send me a mail to get the ai file.

Create a new Photoshop document and size it 250x250. Now create a new layer, call this layer stroke, and make a round selection with the marquee tool by holding (Shift + Alt). Fill it with any color. While selection still active right click it and select transform selection. Now scale it a bit down so you got a stroke of about 9-10 pixels wide. Then hit delete. Duplicate this layer for later use.

You should still have the selection of the inner circle active. Make a new layer and call it middle. Fill the selection with white. Now copy paste the cigarette into our document.

Now we want to make the line that crosses over the cigarette. To do this we just use the line tool. Make sure the line weight is set to the same amount of pixels that your circle stroke has. Now draw a line from the bottom left corner to the top right corner. Now get selection of your middle layer (Ctrl click on the layer we called middle) and apply a mask to your line layer. This way the line will be hidden from outside area of the circle.

Now we got the basics of the layout going. So now we pretty much only need the different styles and blending options.
Apply these Photoshop blending options

Middle layer

Cigarette layer

Line layer for the cross

Gradient colors used #a50606 and #fd2e2e.

Stroke layer

Same gradient colors as above.

You should now have something looking like the picture below

We are missing a shadow for the outer circle. Use the duplicated circle stroke layer we made earlier and use the arrow keys to position it 1-2 pixels right and down. Now fill it with black and set down the opacity till it pretty much have the same look as the line layer shadow has.

Last thing we need to complete the Photoshop tutorial, is to make the cigarette have a little space from the middle. To do this hold Ctrl and click the line layer to make a selection. Now go to transform selection and drag the corner while holding down the Shift and Alt key. Drag until you got enough space between the line and the cigarette. Now apply the selection and while having the cigarette layer on push Ctrl + Shift + I to invert the selection and hit the apply mask button.

Now you're done. You can apply a background image in case you don't want a simple white one.
