Basic Planet


With this tutorial, you will hopefully understand more about the options and tools capable of being used in 3DSM. A basic planetary system incorporates different skills within 3DSM that fcan improve your ability to use this acclaimed program.

Before we start, you may need these set of maps. Download them below and unzip them into your maps/Space folder.

1. Reset the scene and immediately create a sphere (Create>Shapes>Sphere). Use these settings as a guideline:

2. Place your sphere in a similar area by using the move option (Right click>Move)

3. Now go to the Modifiers tab or option menu and select Displace. Make sure your sphere is still selected.

4. With the Displace option selected, enter the following settings. You can always play around with them for you convenience. Make sure you click the "None" under Map and change it to "Dent."

5. Now, we are going to the Material Editor to finalize our main planet. Press M to open up the Material Editor and click on a gray sphere. Go down to the dropdown menu where it says Maps. Check Diffuse Color and then click None right beside it. It should bring up a window. Look at the box in the upper-lefthand corner and select Mtl Library. A whole bunch of maps should come up and for this particular option, scroll down to near the bottom. You should see a map called "Diffuse Color: Map #28 (Jupiter2.jpg)." Double-click to get out of that. Do the same thing for Opacity and the map will be called "Diffuse Color: Map #24 (Moon.jpg)." Use the image below to determine the other settings.

6. We are done making the material for the planet now so click this button image 6 and close the Material Editor.
