Tonal Adjustments: Brightness/Contrast

In the first contest the Auto Color was the champion. However, if you are not discouraged, you may try to adjust tone manually.

1. Open your image.

2. Call Brightness/Contrast dialog box using pull-down menu Image > Adjustments > Brightness/Contrast...

3. Adjust the image to your taste, by moving the sliders one by one. As you can see, the Brightness slider changes overall image tone, while Contrast brightens the image highlight areas and darkens the shadows areas. In many cases, adding some contrast makes your images stronger; however, too contrasting image may loose some important detail in the shadows and highlights.

4. Close the image without saving changes.

Brightness/Contrast is the easiest, but not the best method of tonal adjustment in Photoshop. Let's continue »
