This tutorial will teach you how to create a basic grunge sig with a render.
1. Lets start with a standard 400px by 100 px image size. This is the size that I prefer... Although this tutorial should work with which ever size you want.
2. First, reset your colors and go to Filter > Render > Clouds.
3. Choose an odd grungy brush and just make a few random swipes on the clouds. Don't go crazy but try to fill up about 35%-65% of the space.
4. Now Duplicate the layer, and set the top layer to Overlay.
5. Do a Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur of roughly 4 pixels.
6. Now hit CTRL+U and adjust the color setting to whatever you prefer, for my signature I used the settings of: Hue 200, Saturation 15, and Brightness +7 to give it a faded blue tint.
7. Now, for the lines effect create a new document with the dimensions of 2 by 2. Using the whichever tool you prefer, fill in the top line of pixels so that half of the box is covered. Now, CTRL+A to select the whole area and click on Edit > Define Pattern and set it as one of your patterns. Now go back to your other image and click on Edit > Fill and select that pattern.
8. Now that the background is under control we can move on to the picture. I have chosen to use a picture of Cloud. Now cut the picture out using the Magic Wand Tool and shrink it so that Cloud's head and shoulders will fit into the frame. (Or whatever size you think looks best).
Make sure to give Cloud (or your other guy) a inner and outer glow to take away the rough edges and help fade him into the picture.
9. Now, CTRL+U Cloud again and use the same settings as you did for your background to fade him in. Change the color of the glow to the same blue tone as the background and Cloud.
10. Create a new layer behind Cloud but in front of the background. Use the Rectangular Marquee Tool to select a rectangular area that is closer to the bottom then the top. Fill it in with white, set opacity to 50% and as a stroke of black 1 px. This is where the text will go.
11. Now, write something as I have done below. Make the text either white with a black stroke or black with a white stroke. The location and width are just your preference. (I used A 2px black and white outside). Now, for a final touch create a new layer above everything and give it a 1px inside black stroke.
