Case Study No.1: Kids With Bubbles Advertisement

This is the first post of a new series where we will study specific cases of some clients Works.

For this first study I selected a house advertisement where the kids should be making soap bubbles, playing in front of their new house.

We have 3 images to play with

1. Kids (image from stcock xchange, author)

2. House (Clients file)

3. Background

Step 1 Create the Bubble brush

a)    Open the B512 in the brushes file

b)   Place it against a Black background

image 2

c)    Paint the center of the bubble with a soft Black brush. Set the mode to overlay and the pressure to 50%

image 3

d)   Now select a small soft White brush and paint a small Light in a corner

e)    Paint another Light in the opposite side

image 4

f)     Merge layers

g)    Blur a little: filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur

image 5

h)   Image > adjustments > desaturate

i)     Image > adjustments > invert

image 6

j)     Make a selection

k)    Define brush: edit > define brush

Step 2 Grass color

I needed the grass color to be a little darker so it fit with the grass of the original kids image.

I simply create a new layer with the green color I desired and set the blending mode to linear Light at 67%

Step 3 Place the kids image

I needed the kids to be closer to one another because of the advertisement width

a)    Cut each of the kids image separately

b)   Drag and drop each one of the kids in different layers

c) The other one

You can see different techniques to mask and cut the kids in these tutorials:

Step 4 Place the background house

I wanted the house of the client to be a part of the background, the second plane.

a)    First create some shadows for the house. For this I used a dark soft brush

image 11

b)   I placed the house and apply some Gaussian Blur (filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur) so it blends in the background

Step 5 Bubbles

Now its time to paint the bubbles

a)    Select the bubbles brush with white color

b)    Set the brush options:

c)   Paint some bubbles around the face kid

d)    Two different layers: one with smaller bubbles closer to the face, another with bigger bubbles farther from the face.

The bubbles brush blend so nicely that the blending mode is set to normal at 100%

Step 6 adjusting colors

Now I needed that all the different layers blended in color

a)    Create a new adjustment layer; use the Photo filter. For this case I used a deep Bluec

image 16

b)   Create a second adjustment layer, this time a color balance

image 17

c)    Finally I painted a new layer with a Black brush around the corners. Set the blending mode to Overlay at 60%

Ready a nice composition with the kids in foreground and the house in the background.  The kid's bubbles draw the attention to the background house.
