External Domains Provide Added Traction

For many search engines, you will find it easier to get high rankings on your site's home page than on internal pages. For some reason, these search engines tend to favor the "default page" of the Web site, often thought of as the "home page" and usually containing the index.html Additionally, some some engines favor Web sites that include the targeted keyword in the domain name, so consider this when you are considering what domain name to register.External Domains Provide Added Traction

To take advantage of this effect, you should choose to register additional domain names on which you will host your informational pages or other related Web site content. You can never own too many. That is a rather bold statement, but think about the implications. There are a reasons why people register multiple domain names and pointing to one site. If you have just one, you have limited your ability to attain rankings, to be found in search engines and directories. and to take on your competitors. Think outside the box!

There is no reason why you can't build several different Web sites to target your different business areas. If you already have an established site, be sure to register additional names for the various content areas. This strategy isn't about redirecting users, but about building legitimate Web sites and placing unique compelling content on each one. Using this strategy will give you additional listings if the content is legitimately separate and differentiated, and that will mean more traffic.

Like every company, you will likely decide on one of them to be your "primary" Web presence. The others can be programmed to automatically redirect to that primary Web site so you need not pay hosting fees to maintain them.

No matter which page your visitor enters through, the look and feel should be consistent with your other pages, and the surfer may not even notice that they have navigated from one page to another. You reap the benefits of additional listings in the search engines and hopefully, some improved relevancy.

It's a very common practice to purchase multiple domain name and have them pointing to one site. More come than most new webmaster realize. Depending on which method you use, the procedure is relatively simple to implement. I would recommend a.com extension because it is one of the oldest and most common extension people use when searching for a site. Also, people will assume you are more established with a.com extension.

You may also want to consider a misspelled version of your URL. You would be surprised how often people misspell words when searching on the Web. You can get a descent amount of traffic from commonly misspelled words.

You can register a name with up to 63, but people need to be able to remember it so, keep it it short. It's a good idea to try to register a short name your customers will be able to remember. If possible, keep in under 10 characters.

Regrettably, in today's business climate you have to keep one eye on strategy and another on your defensive posture.
