It's not exactly a suprise when I say that it's every webmasters goal to be the first listing in searches related to there site in such search engines like Google, I mean thats one of the sections of the lovely traffic pie of which your site will receive traffic from, but if you have created a site that has alot of other sites like yours you've got serious competition.
The internet is massive, and it's so big that no one can own the internet it's like a free sprit! But say you have your website set up, and you've set up something like a forum on there, you stare at your members list reaching a all time high of 0. Why? You thought you did well. Setting up your website designing a nice layout and implementing a nice forum. Why is no one visiting my site you say? Well it's because you need to optimise your Meta Keywords and get your website URL linked everywhere!
Meta Tags
Okay we have our scenerio set now its time to show you what we can do. First off Meta tags. Meta tags can include such data as your site's description and keywords related to your site. A example of Meta tags are below:
| <meta name="Description" content="Jim's personal website, where Jim share's his view of many factors of life" />
<meta name="Keywords" content="Jim, Personal, Blog, Life, Blogging" /> |
(This code would be placed on every page on your website within the <head> tags as it is information that a search engine reads not a human. The Head tag is where all your browser/search engine stuff will go, it's there but hidden and not displayed as content!
This is a example of Meta Keywords and Description. These are essential in your webpages so that a search engine can list your site properly. Without Meta information Search Engines will not list you properly
Expanding your Meta Tags
The above example is only a guide. With Meta tags you should be as general as possible, get every little keyword in there that relates to your site because in the end that one little keyword could make all the difference so get everything in there. Your description of your site however should be a quite short and breif, to the point. When you appear in a search engine listing the user will want to know immedietly what the site is about. Having a short description will be easy to achieve this.
Links
Links. Well you should know what a link is, thats it's shorthand name the actual technical name is hyperlink, but we don't really need to rattle off the technical stuff. Links are important to your site and im not talking about links to area on your site. Im talking about links to your site elsewhere on the internet. To make your site known you need to have your website link on loads of different places and this can be done in many ways:
Affiliates
Affiliates are a common way of trading links with others. This usually invloves trading a image/link with each other and adding it to there own site. By doing this you are linking to each other and creating a certain chain
Various Accounts elsewhere
Usually on forums and other area of the web you sometimes have to have a account for something on that website. Using a forum as a example you usually get asked during sign up to add in a Website URL into that website form on the sign up form. This sounds like a long strech and infact it is, but placing your website URL here could pick up small clusters of traffic if that forum is popular and you are a known member on that forum.
Links that give you Traffic
The best and quickest way to get traffic is to provide good content that a user would benefit from and then submit it to other sites that provide content like yours. Using Pulse GFX as a example: we submit tutorials to site's such as Good-Tutorials there are other site's like them but we'll use them as a nice example. Basically if you have tutorials on something web-related there's a great chance that a site like Good-Tutorials will provide a section for them and this is the door of oppurtunity. Submitting content to site's like Good-Tutorials can give you loads of traffic to your site if your tutorial makes it through. See without these massive listing sites we are nothing. We to a certain extent using listing sites alot so we can really promote our content to the world. SImply providing it on your own website won't get you as near as much as submitting elsewhere to other big listing sites. Of course that was a example. You may provide something different which you can submit to sites that provide the content you have. Im just giving you examples of how it works.
How that scenario above works is simple. You submit your content to a site. That site then places your content in there listings, You get X amount of views from that content while the site listing gets views as well for providing that content. It's like a fair trade, your both getting something in return!
Search Engines
Immedietly most people think Google, and so you should has it is the most popular search engine ever. But how does your site end up at the top of search engines? Well im sorry to ruin your sprit but it can take a long period of time to get to the top of search engine lists, it usually also requires spending some money in buying your website name onto such things as Google Adwords/Adsence. So potenially you will need to invest into it before you can get there. The non-money was is of course the meta tags which was explained above, optomising your Meta keywords and description will certainly help you get there but im afraid im going to spoil it now by saying Meta tags aren't the quick way to the top! I wish they were then we'd all get to the top. But sadly it's going to take alot more of Keywords and all that to get there
Meta tags are not the alternative to getting your site number one in searches! You will have to spend usually quite a bit of money in advertisement and other schemes.
Other Free Search engines
Other FREE search engines can get you traffic quicker than the bigger search engines but you will have to accept the fact that you will get no where near as much traffic from free search engines that you would from Google, Yahoo etc with free search engines you can submit your sites URL and you'll be added relatively quite quickly, if your site is starting to really pick up these free search engines will be a great help and give you a respectable amount of traffic!
Well good luck with this. I hope this tutorial explains how to get more traffic and obtain a good place in search engines!
