Photoshop Tip: Background Blurring

In this quick tutorial, learn how to artificially blur out the background of your photo, leaving just the subject in focus.

First open up your photo in Photoshop.

Use the Quick Selection tool to make a selection around the object you want to remain in focus.

Go to Select>Refine Edge, and tidy up the selection. Change the Output to Layer Mask.

Next go to Filter>Blur>Lens Blur.

Change the Source to Layer Mask, and tick the Invert box.

Now play around with the sliders until you are happy with the amount of blur in the background. When you're finished, click OK to apply the effect.

Now you can disable or delete the layer mask.
