Link Manipulation: One of the way that the search engines decide your sites ranking in a search is by the amount of back links to your site is finds on the internet. Every day the search engines are searching all the different websites on the internet and they count link and look at content and even the design of the site itself. It will count the number of other sites that have links to your site, and for each one it finds it gives you a point. Some sites will try many different ways to get links to their sites. One way they do this is by going to different message boards and will leave posting totally unrelated to the topic being discussed just so they can add in a link back to their site, even these types of links are counted as recommendations and increase the sites page rank. This is considered to be dirty pool by most search engines and they are trying to eliminate this type of marketing.

Junk: Thanks to those who would rather use what is known as "Black Hat" marketing techniques we can no longer open our emails without having to delete all the emails fro cheap pharmaceuticals and unsolicited stock tips, but it does not stop there. Now you have to worry when you do a web search that you may get to a spam site and not a site related to what you are searching for. Webmasters are now making sites with the purpose of bringing in traffic. When you go to the site all you find is some text that usually makes no sense at all and dozens of links and banner ads. These sites make money every time someone clicks one of those links. The site itself has no other purpose then to hold the links.

Writing: What you write on your site is very important. The writing has to be good and it has to on topic. If your site if about carpets, you should be writing abut anything subject related such as carpets, rugs, cleaning, storing and anything else that you can think of about carpets. The search engines check ever word on your page and they take the keywords and use them to help determine when you will come up in a web search. Their are many free tools to check which keywords are stronger then others, maybe rugs gets 500 hits a day but carpets gets 1000. Then you would want to have more writing abut carpets.

Algorithms: An algorithm is basically a mathematical equation. The search engines check over website on the internet every few weeks. It then tallies up how relevant your content keywords are compared to your Meta keywords, the basic design of the site and it counts all the links to your site. It then takes all this information and does what it does and then it comes out with your page rank. Then in another few weeks when it runs it again it will recalculate and re rank the site.

Design: When we talk about design as it refers to SEO it does not mean the font or the background color, we are talking about how well it works and how easy it is to navigate around the site. No one will come back to your site if it is difficult to find a desired inner page from the home page.
