Background Lightning Effect

To start this tutorial you will need several images. I am going to use car images from here . You can use what ever images you want that's up to you.

Step 1: To do this you will need a total of about 5 to 10 ten images. The more images the greater the effect will be. So start by opening one of those images up in photoshop. Also make sure all your images are the same size or you can make them the same size by resizing them. Once you open your first image in photoshop you will have to go to image/size/ and make your width about 2 or 3. The smaller you make your image the better the effect will be. All you have to do is change the width, leave all the other settings like I have them.

Step 2: Once your image is re sized, you will need to open up a new document. You can do so by pressing ctrl/ n on your keyboard. Make the size what ever you want. I am making mines 1024 by 768 which is the background size for most computers.

Step 3: Once you have your document open you will drag your image into the new document. You can do so just by placing the mouse on the image and while holding down the left button just move it into your new document. Once you have done so, place your image all the way in the upper left hand corner.  Like this.

Step 4: The next thing you need to do is get a lot more images. After you do so you have to resize them once again so they are the same size as the first one. Once you do so drag them into your new background document once again. Pretend you are making a collage and put all of the images next to each other until you make a square. Do this with about 9 images for the best effect.

After you have made something like this you will need to merge these layers together. So go to Windows/Layers. Once you come up to the layer pallete you will want to make your background invisible. You can do so by pressing on the eye.

If you have a checkered background now then you have done this correctly. So once you have made your background disappear you can go to layer/ merge visible. This will make all those images into one big image. Then go back to your layers pallete and press on the spot where the eye should be. Your background should come back to white.

Step 5: Now that the images are all one layer grab your rectangular marquee tool and select them all at once. Then right click and cut. You can open up a new document and then paste it inside a new document.

Step 6: This is where the fun part comes in play. We are going to resize this big image again. Make the width this time around 3. This is what I have got so far.

Step 7: You are going to have to repeate step three now, by dragging this into your background document again. You will have to drag it into your document several times until you fill up all the space. So its like one big pattern.

The next thing to do is merge all of this together once again. You can do this by going to layer/merge visible. After merging it all we want to make it all in black and white. You can do this by going to image/adjustments/desaturate. Your pattern should be in black and white now.

Step 8: This is where the effect part comes in. You need to find one big image that you want your background to mainly focus on. My background is about the gti Volkswagen So I have found a picture of a Volkswagen that I want to use. Paste that picture in your whole background document so that it covers everything else. Make this picture in black and white also by going to image/adjustments/desaturate.

Step 9: Once your image is covering your collage, go to layer/layer style/blending options. When you come to blend mode change it to Pin Light or Hard Light. Depending on how light or dark your image is.

Once you do that you should have this effect.

And here is another image I made using the same effect.
