Chromatic Grayscale


Create a black and white image using only the color information for an effect similiar to a black and white infrared photo.

Open an image to edit.

Change the image mode to CMYK Color (Image> Mode> CMYK.

Create a new layer (Shift+Ctrl+N)

With the new layer selected, use the Apply Image tool (Image> Apply Image) to apply the following properties:

Layer: Background
Channel: Cyan
Invert: Unchecked
Blending: Soft Light
Opacity: 100%

Repeat the previous step two more times but using the Magenta and Yellow channels.

Change the image mode back to RGB (Image> Mode> RGB Color).

To remove the slight warm tone, desaturate (Shift+Ctrl+U). Rollover the image to see the original image without this effect applied.

Chromatic Grayscale Tutorial: Final Result
Here is the original image converted to grayscale. Rollover the image to see the image with the chromatic grayscale technique applied.
