This is a nice and quick
tutorial to allow you to quickly turn any picture to a silhouette and
preserve some of the color in the lighter portions of the object.
Make sure the image is against a light background to begin with.
1.
Load your image then select the object you want to make a silhouette out
of. If the background is solid, click it with the magic wand and
then inverse (Ctrl+I). Next, press 'Ctrl+J' to copy
the selection to a new layer.

Select the newly created layer and change its mode to Color Burn by
selecting it from the dropdown list. Press 'Ctrl+M' to bring
up the Curves window and drag the plot a few pixels to the left of
the bottom-right hand corner as shown in the picture. Click OK
and you're done.
