This is a nice and quick tutorial to allow you to quickly turn any picture to a silhouette and preserve some of the color in the lighter portions of the object. Make sure the image is against a light background to begin with.
1. Load your image then select the object you want to make a silhouette out of. If the background is solid, click it with the magic wand and then inverse (Ctrl+I). Next, press 'Ctrl+J' to copy the selection to a new layer.

2. Select the newly created layer and change its mode to Color Burn by selecting it from the dropdown list. Press 'Ctrl+M' to bring up the Curves window and drag the plot a few pixels to the left of the bottom-right hand corner as shown in the picture. Click OK and you're done.
